The index finger (also referred to as forefinger,[1] commencement finger,[2] pointer finger, trigger finger, digitus secundus, digitus II, and many other terms) is the 2d digit of a human hand. Information technology is located between the thumb and the middle finger. It is unremarkably the most dextrous and sensitive digit of the hand, though non the longest – it is shorter than the middle finger, and may exist shorter or longer than the band finger – see digit ratio.

"Alphabetize finger" literally means "pointing finger", from the same Latin source equally indicate; its anatomical names are "index finger" and "second digit".

Anatomy [edit]

The index finger has three phalanges. It does not contain whatsoever muscles, but is controlled past muscles in the mitt past attachments of tendons to the bones.

Uses [edit]

A lone alphabetize finger held vertically is often used to correspond the number one (but finger counting differs across cultures), or when held upwardly or moved side to side (finger-wagging), information technology tin be an admonitory gesture. With the hand held palm out and the thumb and eye fingers touching, information technology represents the letter d in the American Sign Language alphabet.

Pointing [edit]

Pointing with the pointer finger may be used to bespeak or identify an item, person, identify or object.[3]

Around the age of ane year, babies begin pointing to communicate relatively complex thoughts, including involvement, want, information, and more. Pointing in human babies can demonstrate the theory of mind, or ability to understand what other people are thinking. This gesture may form i ground for the development of human language. Not-human primates, defective the ability to codify ideas about what others are thinking, use pointing in much less circuitous ways.[4] All the same, dogs[5] and elephants[6] exercise understand finger pointing.

In some cultures, particularly the Malays and Javanese[7] in Southeast Asia, pointing using index finger is considered rude, hence the thumb is used instead.

Index finger in Islam [edit]

In Islam raising the alphabetize finger signifies the Tawhīd (تَوْحِيد), which denotes the indivisible oneness of God. It is used to express the unity of God ("there is no god simply Allah").[ citation needed ]

In Standard arabic, the alphabetize or fore finger is called musabbiḥa (مُسَبِّحة), mostly used with the definite article: al-musabbiḥa (الْمُسَبِّحة). Sometimes as well as-sabbāḥa (السَّبّاحة) is used.[8] [nine] The Standard arabic verb سَبَّحَ - which shares the same root as the Arabic discussion for index finger - means to praise or glorify God past saying: "Subḥāna Allāh" (سُبْحانَ الله)

Gestures in fine art [edit]

As an creative convention, the alphabetize finger pointing at the viewer is in the form of a control or summons. Two famous examples of this are recruiting posters used during World War I by the Uk and the Us.

The index finger pointing up is a sign of educational activity authority. This is shown in the depiction of Plato in the Schoolhouse of Athens by Raphael.[10]
